How to Create a Great Domain Name, Part II

Posted by admin in February 28th 2010

In part I of this article series, we discussed how to use keyword research to pick a good domain name. In this part, I’m going to discuss how to go from your list of keyword phrases you created to actually choosing and registering a domain name that Google will like and that humans will remember.

To do that I pull up Yahoo’s domain registration window. Using the most popular keyword phrase I found, I start trying to find domain names that somehow incorporates that keyword phrase. With a little persistence and creativity, I can usually find a name that is not only memorable for humans, but also contains my most popular keyword phrase.

I make a list of a few possibilities. (I actually use Yahoo to tell me if the name is taken or not. I don’t register my names through Yahoo. I use my web host, Bluehost, whom I highly recommend. There’s nothing wrong with Yahoo, if I didn’t use Bluehost, I would probably use them.)

Once I get my few possibilities down, I then go back over these from the “human” point of view. Only when I have real, unreserved possible domain names that relate to my main keyword phrase, do I start thinking about all of the other criteria, such as: does the domain name reflect what I want the site to be about? Is it memorable? That sort of thing.

I try to keep my domain names no longer than three words long. I would say I keep them no longer than two words long, but virtually all of the two word domain names I come up with are already taken.

Three words is not too long.

When I register the name I hyphenate the words in the name. This makes no difference to search engines. They just throw the hyphens away. This does, however, make a real difference to humans who are trying to decide to click on my site’s link or not.

Consider the difference between: http://www.handmadebaskets.com and http://www.hand-made-baskets.com.

(FYI, neither of these is a real domain that I own. I’m just using this as an example. I picked that keyword phrase at random.)

Now, have I covered everything you need to know about choosing a domain name? No, I haven’t! I’ve really just started. There are many nuances to all of this that you need to get good at. The most important thing you can do now, though, is to get started.

Take a look at those two tools I mentioned–Google’s external keyword tool and WordTracker’s free tool. Make a list of possible keyword phrases for your site idea, and get to work.

Domain Name Appraisal Scam

Posted by admin in February 26th 2010

I’ve had quite a few offers for my domain names over time. There is one kind of offer that I have received numerous times which I would like to warn my readers about. It is a domain name appraisal scam covered up as a domain name enquiry.

Basically what happens is a domain name appraisal company acts as a party interested in the purchase of your domain name. They put together an approach letter like the following email that I received for a domain name of mine:

Hello,

We are interested in xxxx.xxxx

It was listed in auction (your address was found via WHO IS).

Please submit your price for consideration.

Our company is involved in software development/support business. Now domain invetsing/reselling is just an additional direction of our investment strategy.

Looking forward to do business with you.

Regards,

After I received this letter, I replied with something like this “Thanx for the offer. I am planning to develop the domain name in question into a profitable website. However, I value the domain name at $2500, and I will sell it if an offer of that amount is made”.

The next email they sent went right for the juggular:

Hello,

$2500?

Ok.

However, before we buy the domain, we have to make sure that it is worth the amount that you claim.

It is nothing personal, we just want to be sure our investment is valuable. We have seen this post at a forum we frequent which shows a link to a reputable appraiser which you can use to appraise the domain.

Please follow that link to get the name appraised and once you appraise it, send us the appraisal certificate.

Once the appraisal is made, we will talk about making a deal.

Do you use escrow? We prefer it.

Regards,

Nice touch, they did not actually include the appraisal link in the email, but rather pointed me to a forum where they had previously posted their appraisal link. Also, notice the mention of escrow… of course they are concerned about the security of the transaction, there is nothing else on their mind :) . This domain name appraisal scam is very well planned and very well executed. They want to come across as geniune, and I bet a lot of people have falled for it. After all, a great offer for some of your domain names does not come along that often.
I replied that I value the domain name at $2500 and that I do not need a domain name appraisal company to appraise the domain name for me. They hounded me with another 3 or 4 emails begging me to do an appraisal before they gave up.

The moral of the story? Be careful about approaches for your domain name. Think about this – if you are interested in a domain name and you decide to write to the domain name owner to inquire about purchasing that domain name, are you really going to ask that domain name owner to pay for appraisal for their own domain name? I would think you will do your homework, find out how much that domain name is worth, after all, you are purchasing it because in your eyes that domain name is valuable, and only then will you make an offer. People who ask you to pay for appraisal for a domain name you own are one thing and one thing only – DOMAIN NAME APPRAISAL SCAMMERS – so be aware.

Domain Names Auction to Sell Your Domain

Posted by admin in February 23rd 2010

If you wish to sell your existing domain name and sell it quickly, you might achieve more success if you place it in auction. Auction selling domain names offer certain advantages especially if you look to sell domain names quicker than other methods. Aside from being the quickest option known, it can also be benefiting in the following ways:

A domain name auction can be an attractive option because it can readily bring together a group of interested buyers. From a broker’s perspective, it can be very difficult in trying to target those buyers who might be interested on buying particular domain name.

An auction would require a seller to be listed with a domain name broker. On the part of the domain name buyer, this would be a benefit since that it would give some sense of legitimacy to such kind of market. With the presence of brokers, buyers might feel more secure that they will not be shortchanged in the deals that they may be making in the process.

An auction would be the ideal venue for valued information about certain domain names in order to determine their worth. Sellers would enjoy the help of the brokers in order to set a fair market value for their domain name property. Buyers may also be able to obtain information on domain names that will be able to help them determine their bidding price for each domain name. In some ways, an auction will provide a fair market for both the sellers and the buyers.

An auction can also put some order to a gathering of domain name buyers and sellers. It can be good venue for both experienced as well as inexperienced buyers who might not know how to offer the fair value for a certain domain name. Auctions usually starts low with buyers bidding to what they think would be the value fitting for each domain name for sale. This will help buyers avoid the embarrassment of offering too high or too low for a good domain name.

Auctions can help eliminate too much haggling, or at least keep them in check. This puts more efficiency into the whole process and provides buyers with an abundance of domain names to bargain with, at times even more than they can handle.

So should you plan to have your domain name put up for sale, maybe you should give auctions a second look. Not only would it provide sellers with the convenience in looking for interested buyers, it can also provide the buyers with a safe venue to look for interesting bargains and deals. Auctions offer you the quickest way to find the best value for your domain names in so short a time.

All About Mobile Domain Names

Posted by admin in February 18th 2010

When the Internet first came out it was restricted to a wired connection to a computer. Eventually technology improved, creating wireless Internet. At that point the Internet could be accessible through desktops, laptops and mobile devices without wiring. This means that the Internet was now portable. And as more mobile devices are getting created, consumers are exploring how to increase this portability. In fact, wireless Internet has gotten so popular with mobile devices, domain name companies have created a new extension. It’s called .mobi.

.Mobi is the extension of choice for websites that are being formatted for cell phones, pdas and other mobile devices. It can be bought from most major domain name companies such as Godaddy or Network Solutions. As far as registering a .mobi domain name, one would go through the same type of procedure that is associated with traditional domain names. This involves first choosing a .mobi domain name and seeing if it is available.

If it is not available, the domain name company will offer suggestions on what a person can use. Either way, the customer will be given another chance to select another .mobi domain name. Once they get one that is not taken, they can proceed to purchase it. The contract will last one to two years, depending on what they agreed upon with the domain name company. When the contract is up, a person will have to renew their .mobi domain name if they want to continue to keep it.

So, why would a webmaster decide to invest in a domain name that is restricted to mobile devices? Well, it’s mainly because they get an opportunity to center in on a market that is relatively new. Since most webmasters or companies are trying to take advantage of the .coms or the .nets, the .mobi has become somewhat forgotten. This means that it is prime for search engine keywords that would normally not be available for traditional domain names. It can also allow a webmaster a branding opportunity for their company.

However, since a .mobi domain name means a webmaster is creating a website specially designed for a mobile phone, it cannot have the types of frills that it could have if it was being promoted on a computer. Good mobile websites need to be mostly textual with very limited number of pics, (if any). Granted, plain text is not fancy, but it doesn’t require much loading time. Mobile phone sites should also not be very large nor should they be created with frames or other more complicated layouts.

A webmaster may also want to consider trying to divert the mobile website visitor to a regular website. One way this can be done is by advertising the domain name that is associated with a traditional website. But it must be made clear that the site will only display appropriately on regular computers. Another option is trying to capture the person’s email address by offering them something free, such as an e-book or low-cost merchandise.

When they sign up to the email subscription, their first newsletter could advertise the traditional website a webmaster wants promoted. By doing either of these options, webmasters can still take advantage of pay-per-clicks or affiliate programs, revenue generators which may not be promoted on .mobi websites due to viewing limitations with banner or text ads.

More Website Traffic – Implement This Sneaky Banner Ad Trick to Double the Visitors to Your Site

Posted by admin in February 18th 2010

Did you know that you can actually implement a sneaky but legal trick in your market that can double your website traffic overnight? In this article I want to show you exactly what that trick is and how you can implement it right away.

Why Everyone Is Overlooking This Strategy:

When it comes to getting website visitors you have to realize that most people only think about using the main ways to make it happen and don’t think about the other less popular strategies that you can use.

For example – everyone always wants to use article market, pay per clicks & SEO. Almost all marketers end at that and think they have done enough and should get rich if they just keep doing those three.

The Big Secret Right Under Your Noise:

But here is what you need to do – Start running some banner ads on sites in your market and start figuring out which sites are giving you the most profitable visitors who buy the most.

Once you figure this out you then need to offer to buy the site from the owners.

The reason is this – if you can get a bit of traffic from one small banner ad, think about how much money you would make if you bought the site!

The cool thing about this strategy is that once you get the site, you can stick your own content on it and start making money from the visitors right away.

I bought a site and made my money back in literally 6 weeks and it has been making money ever since. You can do this too if you just try it!

How to Create a Great Domain Name Part I

Posted by admin in February 12th 2010

One of the keys to getting your web pages to rank well in Google’s organic searches is the domain name. A lot of people are under a misconception about domain names, however. This article is going to explore the correct way to choose a domain name.

Many Internet users think of choosing a domain name in the same way as they think of naming a business. When you name a business your only concern is how people (humans!) are going to respond to your name. Does the name reflect what the business is about? Is it appealing? Does it make people want to walk in the door, pick up the phone, mail in the coupon? Most importantly, is it memorable?

Choosing the domain name for a website has many of these same criteria, but the human side of things is way overshadowed by search engine optimization issues. If you don’t get the search engine optimization (SEO) part of your domain name right, you can forget worrying about what your real human visitors are going to think about it–there won’t be any!

That may sound harsh, but a lot of internet users still do not fully comprehend how most of us actually arrive at a site for the first time.

Very few sites are visited for the first time from someone actually typing the domain name (in the form of the URL) into the browser address window and hitting Enter. The exception to this maybe the results of email marketing–but we’ll leave that discussion for another day.

In order to pick a great domain name we have to address the search engines first, the human visitors second. To do this I use two free keyword research tools, Google’s external keyword research tool, and WordTracker’s free tool. You can find both of these by googling those terms.

Let’s suppose I’m creating a site about dog training. I take the above two tools and enter “dog training” into them. They both will return a list of keyword phrases related to dog training, along with some indication of how many searches each of these phrases gets per day.

I take those results and organize them into a hierarchy. I choose the top few results to use for my domain name. The others I organize in a two tiered system according to subject matter and number of searches each keyword phrase gets.

Finally, I name the site. This is discussed in Part II of this article.

Several Ways And Means To Buy Expired Domain

Posted by admin in February 10th 2010

Expired domain market is a busy place where everyone would jostle and rush out to find their own expire domains with sense of deep conviction. In reality, buying an expired domain is not as easy as you feel it will be! There are several reasons and causes that motivate people like you and me to buy expired domain. One of the best reasons for indulging in expire domain business is its ability to provide you very lucrative profits for the money invested into the business. Here are some established tips and suggestions that will teach you how you can buy expired domain in an ever-busy market place.

Generally, all soon to get expired domains go through three phases of life:

* Expired status, when the owner of the domain in question will have 40 days of grace period, when he or she can renew the domain again by paying a standard fee

* Redemption period, when the domain enters its decisive period of shut-down and the owner of the domain may need to cough up renewal fee, along with additional penalty.

* Locked period, when the domain name in question enters the deletion phase, which is usually 5 days long. And, on the last day, the name will be officially dropped from the database between 11AM and 2PM Pacific time. Soon after this time, anyone can register for the expired domain.

With these phases of expiration cycle, how does one buy expired domain? In fact, a simple search and buy method may not work in the real sense. There are smart entrepreneurs, who use better and quicker methods to grab the domains, before you actually do. It means that you may need to use methods similar to those used by these entrepreneurs.

Experienced people who are well versed in snatching expired domains always use smart methods. One such method is the “Drop Method” that promises you good expired domains. The Drop is that unpredictable three hour time period, in which the domain gets deleted from the registrar’s database and released back into the pool. If you feel that you can buy expired domain during the dropping process is very easy, you are sadly mistaken and confused. There are no fewer than three or four major services that specialize in snatching away all the good names that become available for sale.

To buy expired domain from a large pool of domains, you may wish to enlist the services on three major domain trading firms, so that you can hope that they will grab a domain name on your behalf. Three main expired domain name trading firms are:

* Snapnames.com,

* Enom.com, and

* Pool.com

All these three forms act and operate in a similar manner. They always use a network of registrars to aim at the ICAAN servers at frequent intervals and grab as many names as possible. As a normal rule, if you do not get your desired name, you will not pay a cent to them. All the three forms operate in slightly different ways and manner.

Another common way to buy expired domain is to approach the soon-to-expire domain owner and ask, if they can transfer the domain name to your name. Yet, another way is to participate in a regular domain auction and buy an expired domain at a very high price. Whatever the way you chose, your main goal should be picking a good and decent domain at an affordable price; to buy expired domain name from the open market, you will also need to know how domain trading business works and operates in the real sense.
